ASSIGNMENT TWO REPRESENTING DATA: NUMBERS AND STATISTICS

THE SKINNY
You will collect data and information on a chosen subject. You will use your classmates/peers to collect the variables of a specified subject (How many books they have read in the last year? for example). The subject can be anything that can be measured statistically. You will then visually represent your research into two
visual solutions. The first (a poster) that is purely a Typographic solution, the
second (a poster) an Image based solution.

INTRODUCTION
We live in a world of information. More and more we depend on the visual translation of data into information as an important part of our everyday life. The term “data” in itself does not constitute communication, but is more accurately defined as raw statistics.

Designers play an integral part in visualizing information and making it accessible to the reader/viewer. Providing informative “form” to raw data in a manner that
allows accessibility and viewer interest, makes the process of communication have more meaning and understanding. Designers can respond to the display of
statistical information by relying on conventionally expected “forms” (words, charts, diagrams, graphs, maps) to display information. But designers can also respond in a manner that invites engagement for the viewer through a form that reflects a “relatedness” to the “content” of the information, as well as new innovative ways to visualize this content.

PROJECT BRIEF
State general project information, goals and relevant background information for project as a whole. This paragraph should be a statement overview of project as a whole. Including your concept statement, research and brand evaluation. This will be turned in so should look professional. Could be included in process book.

CHALLENGE TWO
In this assignment you will explore different methods and strategies for representing data. Specifically Numbers and statistics.

You will use your classmates/peers to collect the variables of a specified subject (How many books they have read in the last year? for example). The subject can be anything that can be measured statistically.

PARAMETERS
Each poster should be 13” x 19” either landscape or portrait. Outside of that the parameters are open. What is the best way to visually represent your collected data as a printed poster? How can type be used as image? How can image speak more directly to you viewer? Continue to examine alternative ways to communicate.

Image based solution: mostly imagery, graphics, shapes, color; some text.
Photographers: How do you use photos? Illustrators: How do you use illustration?

Typographic based solution: mostly text, rules, dots, lines, color; some basic shapes.Think creatively! Cut and paste, copy machine, found type, spaghetti..whatever.

TYPEFACES
When designing these posters you must use typefaces from this provided list. All of which can be found on the server.

TypeFaces: Knockout, Futura, Gotham, Archer, Avenir, Din, Rockwell, Caslon,
Minion, Scala, Trade Gothic, Helvetica, Baskerville, Garammond,
Bodoni, Akzidenz Grotesk, Universe, Clarendon, Frutiger and
Vag Rounded.

FINAL DELIVERABLES
Two posters each 13” x 19” either landscape or portrait. Print on epson (you provide paper) mounted to black core matboard. You will also be turning in a complete process book.

PROCESS BOOK
Create a process book that shows your grid, type styles, headers, sub head, text, call outs, leading... make the pages dynamic while being consistent. This should be
designed to be printed out and presented in an interview or for a scholarship. Your process book can include pieces and studies from Project brief research.

SCHEDULE
Tue Feb 28th: Introduce Assignment 2.
HW: Choose your topic. Choose 5 subjects of which you could
collect variables for (how many books they read in the last year for example). Again, subject can be anything that can be measured statistically. Prepare Questions for each subjest.

Thu Mar 1st: Introduction subjects to class. Lecture on info-graphics/groups.
HW: Narrow down your subjects to two options. How can each subject
be show as both a typographic and image based poster solution?
5 pencil sketches for each of the 4 subjects exploring concept.

Tue Mar 6th: Class Crit. Which ideas and concepts are valid?
Begin to refine ideas. Choose final subject and proceed to tighter
concepts. 6 tighter poster concepts for both image and
typographic solutions (12 total posters). Should now have final statistics.

Thu Mar 8th: Review of concepts. Work in small groups.
Make refinements based on class discussion. Post a comment or
question to your blog. Find good examples of info-graphics to your blog as well. Begin to refine successful concepts. Choose 5 of each image and typographic to refine.

Tue Mar 13th: Guest crit.
Film Paper due when we return.

Mar 15th-22nd: NO CLASS: SPRING BREAK

Tue Mar 27th: Be ready to share a lot of work and paper.
Narrow down options to 2 posters for both type and image. How
can message be more clear? Begin to think about process book.

Thur Mar 29th: Continue refinement on 4 posters. Work in small groups.
Begin to think about how process book will work.

Tue Apr 3rd: Work in class. Bring work to work on. Meet individually.
Narrow down to final 2 posters. Mock up of process book.

Thu Apr 5th: Assignment 2 due. Introduce Assignment 3.
